Given the uncertainty swirling around just where Tim Tebow might land in the 2010 NFL draft, it would seem to be a no-brainer that he would jump at every and any opportunity to showcase his skill set for the folks who will become his future employers.
One of those opportunities with one of the largest contingents of NFL eyes would be the Senior Bowl in late January.
At this point in time, however, the Florida quarterback is undecided as to whether he will play in the showcase.
“I don’t know. I haven’t talked to anybody about it,” Tebow said. “If the people I talk to that are wise think that I should play in it, I’ll go play in it. If they don’t, I won’t. I don’t know.
“I’ll do whatever I need to do [to impress NFL scouts and GMs] — throw out here a million times, I don’t care.”
Tebow said he and head coach Urban Meyer have discussed his participation in the game, but Meyer has not given him advice one way or the other and won’t do so until the coach has spoken to NFL people he trusts.
A Senior Bowl spokesman told the Florida Times-Union that there is no deadline for any player to commit to playing in the game.
Just a piece of unsolicited advice for St. Timothy: You say you’ll do whatever you need to do to impress NFL types? Play in the game. Participate in the activities in the week leading up to the game. If you truly “don’t care” what you need to do, get yourself to the showcase.
Unless you are nervous about exposing yourself. Then by all means, sit it out.
In recent Senior Bowls Joe Flacco showed he belonged with the big boys, Chad Henne made me think he was the most intriguing NFL QB prospect, and Colt Brennan and others (Paul Smith) showed they were clearly system QBs without much pro potential. Tebow should definitely play, if he’s not scared of being exposed. Nobody with any amount of NFL draft acumen thinks Tebow is a legit 1st round prospect, if he wants to change minds the Senior Bowl is the place to do it.
Why does Tebow need to impress NFL people so much? Tony Dungy has already said he would take Tebow as a top ten pick. Tebow might only hurt his stock rather than help it by playing in the senior game. Tebow isn’t Joe Flacco who had very little exposure his whole college career…. Tebow can’t really be EXPOSED considering he has played 4 years of college against the best defenses in college football the whole time.. to suggest he could be is beyond absurd. If people can’t evaluate Tebow’s skills from the film they have to this point then they obviously can’t evaluate talent period. Tebow would also be putting his fate in the hands of people that may be jealous haters.. not unlike the people so willing to trash him in articles like these.
Dungy doesn’t have a team with which to pick Tebow top 10, however, he does share another affiliation with Tebow that makes me afraid it is clouding Dungy’s judgement.
Tebow needs to demonstrate he can do something other than the offense that was built around him at Florida. He goes to the senior bowl, does a bland, pro-style, dumbed down offense, and does it well, than maybe he will look more like a QB prospect than an Athlete prospect.
He MAY be the the greatest college football player ever in terms of wins and accomplishments, but that is no guarantee of professional success.
So many of the quarterbacks that have come from Florida’s system have had such great pro careers: Danny Wuerffel, Chris Leak, Rex Grossman, Jesse Palmer, Doug Johnson, etc.
