UNLV goes to Montana for new head coach

In the past couple of days, it’s become patently obvious that UNLV’s choice for their new head coach would come down to either Dennis Franchione or Bobby Hauck.

Those reports were indeed correct, and the winner is… Montana head coach Bobby Hauck.

(Or, as one emailer put it, “Billy Bobby Huock Hock Hauck, Has been hired by UNLV.” For some reason, I think that was a shot at me and how I butchered the name in previous posts.  Could be a coincidence, though.)

UNLV is expected to make an official announcement on Wednesday, the Associated Press is reporting.

The 45-year-old Hauck had been the coach at Montana since December of 2002, and will replace  Mike Sanford as the Rebels’ coach.  Sanford, incidentally, was named as Louisville’s new offensive coordinator earlier today.

According to Jim O’day, the AD at the U, the plan is to have a coach within the week. A possible short list according to the Missoulian in Missoula goes as follows.
    (in no particular order)
    1. Robin Pflugrad, UM’s Receivers coach,
    2. Kraig Paulson UM’s DC,
    3. Mike Hudson UM’s Secondary coach
    4. Jim McElwain Alabama’s OC
    5. Dave Doeren Wisconsin’s DC
    6. Mike Van Deist HC Carrol College (oh please, no.)
    7. Mike Breske North Dakota St.
    8. Brent Pease Boise State’s Receivers coach.
( I realize this “short list” isn’t very short.)
4-8 All have Montana ties in someway. Should be interesting to see who gets the job. I vote for McElwain or Pease, Please.

If McElwain leaves T-Town for Missoula then he is not as smart as I thought he was.
