Academics claim a Hokie starter

Starting cornerback Stephan Virgil will not be available for Virginia Tech’s Chick-fil-A Bowl match-up with Tennessee, the school announced Wednesday.

Virgil was declared academically ineligible and will not play in the bowl, putting an end to a both his senior season and his collegiate career.

Virgil missed the second and third games of the season following a knee injury, but came back to start the final nine games for the Hokies.

Sophomore Eddie Whitley will likely get the start against the Volunteers, the Virginian-Pilot reports.
