After much thought over the holidays, however, the talented Irish linebacker has decided to forego a two-year Mormon mission and return to South Bend.
Merry Christmas, Brian Kelly.
"It is official, Manti announced he will not be withdrawing from school next semester but will return to ND to complete his first year of studies," Te'o's father, Brian, told the South Bend Tribune. "He will be playing for the Irish next season."
As noted by the Tribune, Latter Day Saints members typically take on a mission after reaching the age of 19. Te'o reaches that landmark age in late January.
The true freshman became a starter midway through the 2009 season and finished fourth on the team in tackles.
Congratulations to Manti for a very successful 1st year and representing his family and especially his Samoan heritage with pride! Not overly excited with the use of "scrubs" to describe his postponement of his plans for a mission and pray for his decision to be the best interest for him and not others. Good luck Manti and we're proud of you here in Samoa!!
