And there were people who thought this afternoon’s Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl was void of intrigue. And reasons to stay awake. To that I give a hearty “pfffttt” to all of you.
A seven-yard reception late in the first quarter of the bowl game gave Bowling Green wide receiver Freddie Barnes 143 receptions for the season. That total breaks the single-season Div. 1-A record of 142 catches previously held by Houston’s Manny Hazzard back in 1989.
But wait. Barnes wasn’t finished with his record-breaking ways.
His next catch in the game gave him 144 for the season, breaking the all-division record set by Nick Smart from Division II Southwest Baptist in 2007.
Barnes’ records are doing much of nothing for the Falcons in their quest for a bowl win, however, as they trail Idaho 28-14 with just over five minutes left in the third quarter.
