Al Groh to join Georgia Tech on Wednesday?

Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson will hold his season-ending press conference Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. ET.

Brian Biggane, of the Palm Beach Post, is monitoring any developments involving fired University of Virginia head coach Al Groh, who is a candidate to land on the Miami Dolphins’ coaching staff because of his ties to Dolphins V.P. of Football Operations Bill Parcells. The ‘Fins fired defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni on Tuesday.

Georgia Tech also lost its defensive coordinator when Dave Wommack was fired last week.

Groh, of course, is also a strong candidate to coordinate the Yellow Jackets’ defense. The sides are reported to have “mutual interest.” According to Biggane, “media speculation in Atlanta has it that Johnson would like nothing better than to take (Wednesday’s) opportunity to introduce Al Groh as his new defensive coordinator.”

Guaranteed $4.33 million over the next two years from Virginia, money probably won’t be the overriding factor in Groh’s decision. Thus, it may come down to whether he wants to return to the NFL with longtime pal Parcells, or stay in the college ranks, where the hours are less grueling.

Stay tuned.
