Report: Kiffin to be USC's next head coach

Scott Wolf of the Daily News, a guy who has been incredibly plugged into the USC program, is reporting that he has two sources that are telling him that Lane Kiffin will be named USC’s next football coach.

(If this sounds like Ferris Bueller at 31 Flavors, don’t blame me…)

Kiffin’s name just vaulted to the head of the search — a search that started today with Jack Del Rio, moved to Steve Mariucci, brought Herm Edwards into the story, and also had Steve Sarkisian’s name get bounced around.

Kiffin’s move to USC from Tennessee after just one season would be a seismic shift, and some Vols message boards are already having a nuclear meltdown.

    Mike Leach to Tennessee

I assume I am very naive when I think that the student athlete nature of college players means that looking exclusively at NFL coaches (or in Kiffin’s case, sort of NFL-coaches) is not the proper things to do. The money, the perks, the status are all very close to NFL levels, and perhaps Carroll would never have left USC if the prospect of sanction was not hanging over the program.

Al Davis’ calling him a “flat out liar” accuratley describes this sleazeball. he was never going to do much in the SEC anyway.

good riddance. the guy was a laughing stock.

Good news for Urban Meyer’s health; his blood pressure just dropped 20 points on this news.

  8. Spiffy Kiffy says: Jan 12, 2010 9:23 PM

    Bye, bye Spiffy!
Don’t let the SEC door hit you in the @ss!
He must be very afraid of losing to Meyer, Saban, and all the real SEC teams!!!

  9. Dave The CynicL1 says: Jan 12, 2010 9:26 PM

Wonder if he will still take pot shots at Urban Meyer? His open mouth insert foot should go well in the L.A. market!

So do the Vols go after Gruden now? If he comes in does Monte stay?
Chucky has stated in the past he wants to be involved with the spread so does he go after Franklin or Leach as OC?

    I second that. Go Gators!

Lane Kiffin is such a slimeball. I hate Tennessee, as they’re one of UF’s main rivals, but I feel bad for them now. Of course, they did bring this upon themselves by hiring that douche in the first place.

So a school facing serious NCAA sanctions brings in a coach who appears to make a game out of accumulating violations? I don’t think I want to miss a minute of this!

  15. rolltide says: Jan 12, 2010 9:40 PM

Poor Vols. Good luck finding a coach that wants to play Meyer and Saban every year. I’d feel bad for them, but their tears taste like lemonade.

  16. gator_prof says: Jan 12, 2010 9:42 PM

USC and Kiffy couldn’t possibility be that stupid. I am assuming that UT would have a rather large buy out. I can’t see USC handing the keys over to a guy who barely cracked .500.

  17. Deb says: Jan 12, 2010 9:44 PM

Sure hope there’s no more to this USC coaching report than the others. I’d really miss having Little Lanie in the SEC. He was such a perfect fit for our colorful conference … with his busloads of “Spirit Girls” helping to, um, recruit … and the SEC practically threatening to gag him just so he’d shut up. It would be a shame to lose comic talent like that.

Leach would be perfect for UT. Leach is a good coach and would be an upgrade over Kiffy.
Bye bye Kiffin…we all knew that you weren’t man enough to compete in the SEC. Go back to the land of fruits and nuts…

If this is true. Lane Kiffin leaves Knoxville in a second to come back to LA.

Seriously, that’s a good call, Leach to Tennessee would really shake up the SEC. That would be freaking great.

Good riddance, now I can root for my Vols again!!!

The more I see of Lane Kiffin, the more I think this guy is totally nuts. He couldn’t get attention for Tennessee without getting the NCAA involved; he couldn’t get his name mention in the same breath as Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, and Steve Spurrier without hurling an insult or accusation at them; and he stayed in Mike Slive’s doghouse all year long because of his unrelenting efforts to turn the SEC coaching fraternity into a fraternity house. Any guy that makes Al Davis look sane has got to be certifiable himself.
Why did Kiffin leave Tennessee after only one season to go to USC? Because it only took him one year to figure out that as long as Saban and Meyer were around, he was going to be battling for third-best. And even then, with the rest of the head coaching talent in the league, third-best was going to be very hard to reach and maintain.
Why did USC decide to settle for Kiffin (and I do mean “settle”)? Because there is a good chance that USC is going to get slapped hard by the NCAA in the Reggie Bush case. The Trojans will likely lose scholarships, and perhaps even some of their current roster will transfer out. Kiffin, then, becomes the convenient seat-warmer and fall guy that USC can promptly dump after a few years so they can then hire one of the guys they really wanted, one of the ones that would have normally been interested but said “No, thanks” with sanctions looming on the horizon.
Who else may be losers in this? Tommy Tuberville for one, who must be kicking himself for rushing to take the Texas Tech job instead of getting another SEC post like he really wants. Alabama may be a loser, as well, since defensive coordinator Kirby Smart turned down a lateral move to Georgia to keep himself in a better position for a head coaching shot–and now that shot may be coming his way.
The biggest winner? Tennessee, of course. Maybe now they’ve learned their lesson about getting their coaches from the playground and will actually hire an adult for the position. Certainly the league will benefit, and so will Mike Slive, who can now get rid of the three extra secretaries he had to hire to spend all their time writing nasty letters to tell Kiffin to shut up.

  26. gator_prof says: Jan 12, 2010 10:06 PM

It only cost USC 800k$ to get him out of UT, which is still too much for a crappy coach.
