AFA’s DeRuyter expected to take over Aggie defense

Texas A&M head coach Mike Sherman could -- should -- have himself a new defensive coordinator in very short order, the San Antonio Express-News is reporting.

According to the paper, and citing a source close to the A&M program, Air Force coordinator Tim DeRuyter is expected to be named to the same position with the Aggies. No deal is in place yet but one is expected soon.

DeRuyter and Boise State coordinator Justin Wilcox were believed to be Sherman’s top two choices to replace Joe Kines, who retired from coaching last month.

Wilcox, however, seemed to take himself out of the running Friday for a move to College Station. Or, at the very least, realized that the job was going to DeRuyter.

“That’s a great place with a rich tradition and I have great respect for it, but I love it here and I’m excited to be here,” Wilcox told the Idaho Statesman.
