Vols' defense: Strong as Steele?

If the reports coming out of the area are indeed true, new Tennessee head coach Derek Dooley just made himself a very nice addition to his coaching staff.

According to VolQuest.com, Clemson defensive coordinator Kevin Steele will inform his players this afternoon that he is leaving the Tigers for the same job with the Volunteers.

Steele could be in Knoxville as early as this evening, the website reports.

Steele is no stranger to UT as this would be his third-go-around with the school.  Twice he was a member of Johnny Majors‘ staff in the 1980′s.  He also played for Majors in the late 1970′s.

Steele’s hiring would give Dooley a pair of very qualified coordinators to help him in his first season as the head of a BcS school; on Monday, the school announced that Dooley was retaining Jim Chaney as his offensive coordinator.

Kevin Steele moves too much for his own good. Always looking for that extra buck. Lets see, in the early 2000′s he was supposed to be the next head man at FSU once Bowden retired. Then came Jimbo and Steele went to Bama with Saban. He left after one year to go to Clemson. If Steele had stayed at Bama he would probably be UT’s head coach today.

Steele went 9-36 as a Head Coach…not that it disqualifies you from a HC job at a major program these days.

    spudvol,
At Baylor. What could he have been a La Tech? I guarantee you Saban had Steele higher on the totem pole than Derek Dooley. So why wouldn’t UT?

    Seeryer,
Perhaps, after you had finished reading Nick Saban’s mind to determine how high of regard he held each of his former assistants, you could have focused your amazing powers on Mike Hamilton in Knoxville and found the answer to your question.
