Cancer hits Chuck Amato

Former North Carolina State head coach Chuck Amato has been diagnosed with a cancerous spot on his tonsil and is undergoing treatment, the Charlotte Observer is reporting.

The cancer was discovered in December, and rumors of a health issue affecting the coach had been spreading throughout the Internet ever since. Amato decided to address his health situation via a statement after a couple of newspapers sought an update on his health.

“I appreciate the concern and prayers so many people,” Amato said. “The prognosis is optimistic, which is very encouraging, and with the grace of God and the support of my family and friends and the Wolfpack Nation, I will get through this.”

Amato, who was not retained by new head coach Jimbo Fisher after spending the past three season’s on Bobby Bowden‘s Florida State staff, said that, in six weeks, “I will be as good as can be and ready to go if someone out there is looking for a great coach.”

We extend our best wishes to Coach Amato as he gets back to health and returns to the football field.
