Skip Holtz's first recruiting class nets 15

Skip Holtz has barely been on the job at USF for more than two weeks, so it’s not surprising that his first recruiting class netted a modest 15 players.

Not to be outdone, however, Holtz still managed to get a national letter of intent from more four-star prospects than conference rival Connecticut.

The Bulls’ first prize commit is 5-foot-10, 165-pound cornerback Terrence Mitchell out of Tampa. In addition to earning four stars from Rivals, Mitchell was rated the 12th best corner in the nation by ESPN.  He runs his forty in the 4.4 range and chose South Florida over several BCS schools.

Todd Chandler of Miami is Holtz’s second four-star prospect.  ESPN had Chandler as the 20th best defensive tackle in the nation.

The class is rounded out by RBs Tiger Powell, Marcus Shaw, and JUCO product Mike Hayes, OLs Jake Kaufman, Tony Kibler, and Quinterrius Eatmon, WRs Deonte Welch and Jamaal Montague, safeties Reshard Cliett and Mark Joyce, OLB Han Louis, and P/K Chris Veron.

A trio of three-star recruits — DB Curtis Weatherspoon, DE/LB Brandon Wilkinson, and DE Claude Davis — are already on campus, in addition to two-star offensive lineman Austin Reiter.

If there are 4 early enrollees, isn’t the recruiting class actually 19, not 15? Plus you only listed 14 signees….I believe we also signed a QB.
In any event, we did not lose a lot of players to graduation and we have a ton of linebackers and WRs.
Overall it was a pretty good group for such a short time on campus, but most of these guys will be redshirted and spend the year in the gym bulking up.

Holtz has his sites on winning more than the Leavitt standard of 6 or 7 with the big end of year choke.
This is as good of news for Bulls football as the firing of Leavitt was.
