Last year Bob Gregory spent his eighth season as Cal’s defensive coordinator.
And, as it turns out, it was unexpectedly his last.
According to a press release issued by Cal, Gregory is leaving the program to become the defensive coordinator at Boise State.
Gregory was a member of Jeff Tedford‘s original Cal staff back in 2002.
“I appreciate Bob’s dedication and loyalty to the Cal football program over the last eight seasons,” Tedford said in a statement. “This was coach Gregory’s decision all the way to make what he feels is the best move for his family. I admire Bob both as a professional and a friend, and respect his value of family. I support his decision to do what’s best for his family and wish them all the best as they move forward.”
Gregory will replace Justin Wilcox as the Broncos’ coordinator. Earlier this month, Wilcox left Boise to become Tennessee’s new coordinator.
“I am grateful to coach Tedford for the tremendous experience I had at Cal,” said Gregory. “I loved working with him and will really miss all the coaches and players, but this decision is a great move for my family.”
The release stated that the school would commence a national search for a replacement immediately.
UPDATE 6:36 p.m. ET: Gregory was hired as a defensive assistant, not as a replacement for Wilcox. Pete Kwiatkowski is officially Wilcox’s successor.
seems like a case of taking a job with less responsibiity and less pay… appears to be some details that we do not yet know on this one.
