Hawkeyes backfield depth thinned a bit

A potentially overflowing backfield situation in Iowa has found itself a little less crowded this morning following the departure of a player who at one time was a highly-touted prospect, multiple media outlets are reporting.

Jeff Brinson, one of the highest-rated members of Kirk Ferentz‘s 2008 recruiting class, has decided to transfer from the school.  Brinson’s father is suffering from heart issues, so Brinson is officially transferring to be closer to him and his St. Petersburg, Fla., residence.

Brinson was a redshirt in 2008, then had just one carry in 2009 courtesy of a foot injury.

Freshman Adam Robinson and Brandon Wegh carried the running game load for the Hawkeyes last season, rushing for nearly 1,500 yards between them.  Jewel Hampton, who was expected to replace Shonn Greene in the starting lineup last season, should return to full health in 2010 after missing 2009 with a knee injury.

Plus they have a couple coming in. Good luck to him. It will be a crowded backfield for couple years.

As an Iowa fan I wish him the best of luck. Iowa’s backfield is maybe the most loaded in the country so I was expecting some transfers. I know Florida State went after Brinson hard in high school so maybe he’ll end up there.

He wasn’t bad at Northeast – maybe he could FINALLY be the answer to USF’s lack of running game during the bygone Leavitt era.
USF seems to be the logical landing zone if he’s going to play locally since SPC, UT and the Univ of Phoenix don’t have football programs.

I was going to mention USF as well. Here’s hoping the NCAA grants a waiver so that he doesn’t burn a year of eligibility (redshirted in 2008 already). I don’t think there are any Division II football schools in Florida, and Brinson’s unlikely to consider D3, even if there’s a school there that plays it. So I think the three closest football programs are USF, UCF (Orlando) Webber (Babson Park, a little east of the bay). From there it gets a lot farther, like UF or one of the schools down by Miami.
