Today was not exactly a good day for the top quarterbacks of the Class of 2009.
Earlier, it was reported that top dual-threat QB Tyrik Rollison was transferring from Auburn to Sam Houston State.
Now comes word that the top-rated signal caller from that class will no longer be playing the position.
LSU head coach Les Miles announced this afternoon that Russell Shepard will be moving full-time to wide receiver. While he was listed as a quarterback last season, Shepard did not throw a pass and spent most of his limited time on the field as the point man in LSU’s version of the Wildcat.
This year, all of Shepard’s efforts will be concentrated on learning the receiver position.
“He’s all at wide receiver and in his mind,” Miles said according to the Shreveport Times. “He’ll get ball handling and running back play as a sidelight to his receivers position.
“This gets him on the field every down. When you’re at (situational) quarterback, it’s very difficult to be on the field every play. So if he starts with base at wide receiver, then we think that it allows us to play him.”
Miles did leave the door slightly ajar for Shepard to possibly see some “situational” time at his old position, but the majority of reps will go to starter Jordan Jefferson and backup Jarrett Lee.
