The ground game was the star of Miami’s scrimmage yesterday evening. The quarterbacks? Meh, not so much.
Freshman backs Lamar Miller and Storm Johnson combined for 167 yards on just 17 carries and scored three touchdowns in the Hurricanes’ 100-play scrimmage. And they’re not even expected to get the majority of the carries this coming season.
While stating that “[o]verall, I thought it was a good scrimmage for us,” head coach Randy Shannon didn’t share the same opinion of the play of his quarterbacks.
“The quarterbacks didn’t do very well tonight,” Shannon succinctly said of A.J. Highsmith, Spencer Whipple and Stephen Morris.
Of course, the Hurricanes were without starter Jacory Harris, who is sitting out spring practice after undergoing surgery on the thumb on his throwing hand.
What this does, though, is reiterate how important it is to keep Harris upright and on the football field if the ‘Canes want to make any kind of move back toward the elite of the game.
These guys have impressive speed — real gamebreaker types. I’ve heard from defensive guys that Lamar Miller is incredibly elusive and has already ‘broken a couple ankles’. Should be exciting to watch as he gets more touches.
