Lakers owner says he didn't pay to get Kiffin to LA

As we continue to keep one eye on Lane Kiffin‘s bid to become the Sexiest Woman Alive — he’s up 70-30 percent in his bid for a first-round upset — there’s a rumor involving the Southern Cal that can seemingly be put to bed.

When Kiffin abruptly left Tennessee for USC, there were reports that Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss paid the $800,000 buyout to get the coach out from under his UT contract.

Buss’ response?  Not true.

“I heard about that story,” Buss told ESPNLosAngeles.com. “There is absolutely zero truth to it. I had never even heard of Lane Kiffin until I picked up the newspaper and saw he had been hired.”

So, there you have it.  Hopefully y’all will be able to sleep a little bit better tonight armed with that knowledge.

Oh, and Dr. Buss also said he “was and… wasn’t” surprised that Pete Carroll left for the NFL, creating the opening for Kiffin.

Now, get along.  Go do your civic duty and vote…
