Fresh off a Rose Bowl win and yet another ten-win season, Jim Tressel has seen Ohio State extend his contract, the school announced this morning.
According to the press release, Tressel’s current deal was extended by two years, and will now run through Jan. 15, 2015. The coach did not receive a bump in pay as part of the extension.
“We wanted to reward Jim for his exemplary work with our football program and lock him in as our coach for an additional two years,” athletic director Gene Smith said in a statement. “Jim has never once come to me about compensation. Jim has indicated to me he is satisfied with his salary. He is aware of the financial situation we all face in athletics and I am thankful for his service and loyalty to the goals of the department.”
“We are fortunate to have a wonderful university administration, athletics administration, coaching staff and players,” Tressel said. “To be able to continue building the Ohio State tradition alongside these people, along with our band, cheerleaders, fans and university community, is an honor.”
Tressel’s contract addendum is subject to the approval of the Board of Trustees at the May board meeting.
In nine years at the school, the 57-year-old Tressel has compiled a 94-21 mark (59-13 in Big Ten play), six conference titles — including a current streak of five straight — and, of course, the 2002 national championship.
What about the speculation that he would step down after his original contract ended? Oh well, the man can recruit, this year’s misses notwithstanding.
In other news, Rich Rodriguez is still the coach at UM.
Good for Coach Tressel, good for tOSU. LOL @ Michigan, as usual.
Will be interesting to see where RichRod, Kiffin, Saban, Meyer, et al are come 2015.
He’s a great coach. Don’t forget his 8-1 record against Michigan.
He led the Buckeyes to a National Championship in the 2002 season, not 2001.
Good for him! Great coach! Even better human being!
