A tailgate-loving Bulldog fan passed along the new gameday regulations that Georgia officials have implemented, and expects there to be quite a bit of outrage with the hub of tailgating getting all but shutdown.
With the goal to “enhance the gameday experience for everyone,” Georgia will be banning tents, kegs, generators, TVs, loud music, grills, tables, and furniture from North Campus.
(Basically everything.)
Having spent a Saturday on North Campus in the midst of professional tailgaters and drinkers, I can assure you this is a big deal. I expect the goal was for their to be absolutely zero people on North Campus during football games, because when I was there, all I saw were tents, kegs, generators, TVs, full bands, grills, tables, and couches and recliners. (And this was all more than four hours before the game started…)
The school’s goal is to protect “the historical assets of the University campus,” and I’m sure they’ll cut down on the number of obliterated dudes with incredible bangs flopping on their foreheads drinking whiskey from a red Solo cup in North Campus. But if they think they’re going to cut down on excessive drinking that occurs before a football game, they’ve got another thing coming to it.
I’ve been there too and it was awesome but people let it get out of hand; they didn’t clean up after themselves and the school was tired of North Campus looking like a landfill after the game. Fans can cry all they want but they’re the ones who killed it. Don’t blame the school, blame all the doggie fans who are too redneck to use a trash can.
Why any football team, college or pro, would do this is beyond me. The experience of gameday can’t be matched by ANY other sport and the experience, for many, starts well before kickoff. Why mess with a good thing?
I go to Athens multiple times every year… I don’t think this will stick first of all… Even though ‘we doggies’ are too ‘redneck’ to use a trash can…
daffx4, wasn’t painting all Dawg fans, just the redneck a-holes who think the world is their trash can and toilet too. Those come in all SEC flavors.
UGA follows the Ohio State lead in shutting down Hineygate and college game day tail gaters.
What a shame these long time traditions are gone due to the negative, alcohol related, attention getting antics of a few fans.
