Backup quarterback Curt Phillips suffered what could be a potentially serious knee injury during Wisconsin’s scrimmage Saturday, leaving his availability for the 2010 season very much up in there.
The No. 2 player behind starter Scott Tolzien injured his right knee, although head coach Bret Bielema would not discuss the severity of the injury until he’d spoken to the medical staff.
A source told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that injury was serious and Phillips’ 2010 season could be in jeopardy.
If Phillips is indeed lost for the season, highly-touted redshirt freshman Jon Budmayr would become Tolzien’s backup. Ever the competitor, Budmayr, while lamenting a fallen teammate, said it’s time for him to advantage of the additional reps.
“Obviously with Curt down I’ve got to take advantage of each rep and keep learning,” said Budmayr, who did not talk about the specifics of Phillips’ injury. “It hurts our entire team to lose Curt. He is such a great asset. And it is tough to see a teammate go down, especially one you’ve been working with all winter.
“We’ve just got to be supportive and hopefully he heals quickly.”
Bielema is expected to address Phillips’ injury situation following this afternoon’s practice.
