Illini QBs struggle, but RBs shine

The race to replace Juice Williams under center continued this afternoon during Illinois’ spring game, although none of the combatants for the starting job did much of anything to inspire any kind of confidence.

Well, unless you consider throwing copious amounts of picks a confidence-building exercise.

Redshirt freshman Nathan Scheelhaase, the leading candidate for the job, threw two interceptions, while redshirt sophomore Jacob Charest threw two of his own. Freshman Chandler Whitmer did throw a touchdown pass and had no picks, so Ron Zook has that going for him. Which is good.

On the plus side for the Illini was the running game.

Mikel Leshoure rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns, with a good chunk of his yardage coming on a 75-yard TD run. Fellow back Jason Ford chipped in with 99 yards and another score.
