Another Boise-to-MWC rumor ahead of league meeting

Just a couple of days ago, and from seemingly out of the blue, Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News wrote that “there’s at least a decent chance” Boise State would be offered a spot in the Mountain West in the not-too-distant future.

Wilner reported that an offer could be extended when MWC presidents meet early next month, and most certainly -- if it’s going to happen -- before July 1 so the conference would be able to use BSU’s stellar past-years performances in the BcS formula used to determine automatic qualifiers.

In order to do that, BSU would need to be in the MWC for the 2011 season. In order to be a member of the MWC in time for the ’11 season, they would have to be invited by July 1 of this year, and accept by the first of September.

Thus, the seeming sudden urgency for speculation on Boise’s conference future.

While Wilner was alone on Speculation Island for 48 hours or so, that is no longer the case as he now has some company.

According to a posting by ESPN‘s Joe Schad on his Twitter page, “two people close to situation said MWC more likely than not to offer membership in June.”

Schad gave no other details.

It was less than a month ago that, per the Idaho Statesman, the “door to the Mountain West is closing” for Boise State. Now, it appears, somebody’s about to kick the damn thing down. Or, at least, somebody seems interested in expediting the process of kicking the damn thing down.
