Unga likely officially done at BYU

When Harvey Unga voluntarily withdrew from school in the middle of April after violating BYU’s honor code, it was thought that the running back had played his final down for the Cougars and would make himself available for the NFL’s mid-July supplemental draft.

A few days later, reports emerged that Unga’s preference, if he could be readmitted, would be to return to the football team and finish off his record-setting career.

Now, however, comes word that Unga’s collegiate career is all but over.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, Unga will not be eligible to return to the school until January of next year at the earliest.  The paper reports that BYU’s Dean of Students made the decision recently after considering Unga’s application for readmission.

Unga and his girlfriend — a Cougar women’s basketball player — both voluntarily withdrew from the school around the same time earlier this year.  It’s somewhat ironic, though, that the word “withdrew” is being used in this situation as the rumor has it that the reason for their leaving school was that the girlfriend might have been “with child”; the school’s honor code forbids, among other things, premarital sex.

Anyway, the Tribune reports that it is now likely that Unga will make himself available for the upcoming NFL draft.

If Unga’s BYU playing days are indeed over, he will leave as the school’s all-time leading rusher.
