Michigan still awaiting word on five-star signee’s status

Talent-wise, there’s little arguing that Demar Dorsey is the crown jewel of Rich Rodriguez‘s 2010 recruiting class.

Now, if they could just get the five-star defensive back in school and on the football field.

According to Rodriguez, the school is still awaiting the senior transcripts of Dorsey -- along with several other recruits -- to determine whether or not he’ll qualify academically for entry into the Ann Arbor school. A determination on his/their status could still be several weeks away.

“There’s always a handful of guys that you’re waiting for their senior transcripts to get in before their acceptance or non-acceptance happens, so (Dorsey) and a few others we’re waiting on,” Rodriguez said according to the Detroit News. “Most of the guys, the reports we’ve gotten is that they’re doing pretty well and they’re on track.”

Just in case his academics aren’t up to snuff, Dorsey signed a Letter of Intent with Fort Smith Community College last month. Rodriguez seems to be taking the just-in-case tack as well -- at least mentally -- as he’s not counting on any of the freshmen --specifically Dorsey -- before he knows they can be counted on.

“We’ve talked about it a little bit, but if you’re counting on them significantly it makes you really nervous,” Rodriguez was quoted as saying, this time by AnnArbor.com. “You sign them with the expectation they will come in and compete, every one of them. But the areas where we’re thinnest probably are in the secondary and at defensive end, so you would expect maybe guys would come in and help there.”

When it comes to Dorsey, there’s also the little matter of some off-the-field baggage that’s unrelated to whether or not he will qualify academically. According to various reports, Dorsey has been arrested three times on burglary/robbery charges since turning 16.

Possible academic issues? Check. Potential legal woes? Check.

Yep, seems like the quintessential RichRod recruit to me.
