Safety Jerimy Finch is officially leaving the Indiana football program. The former five-star recruit that made waves when he decided to transfer back home to Indiana after playing his freshman season at Florida never made his mark at IU, and now looks to find a new school to finish his collegiate career.
“We thank Jerimy for his contributions to the program and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors,” Indiana head coach Bill Lynch said in a statement.
Finch’s career never got on track, only contributing on special teams last season as a junior after doing the same after the NCAA ruled him eligible to play immediately after transferring. Finch’s crowning achievement may have been his recruitment. Long commited to Michigan, Finch made a last second change to Indiana, only to make a Signing Day switch to Florida, crushing Hoosier fans that would’ve kept Rival’s number one safety in the country at home in Indiana.
Back in April, ESPN’s Big Ten blogger Adam Rittenberg reported that Finch was making progress for the Hoosiers.
“Jerimy’s had a good spring,” co-defensive coordinator/secondary coach Joe Palcic told me in April. “We’ve been a little bit down on him, but he’s had a good spring, and I think he’ll have a chance to help us. … It’s definitely been a process, and he’s finally taking it seriously, too. His biggest problem was just his ability to stay on keys and do the right things in coverage. He’s doing a good job of concentrating, and he’s finally in position now where he’s about ready to step up and play for us.”
It’s likely Finch will end up playing at a D-IAA school next year. He’s not the first and certainly won’t be the last highly touted five-star recruit that washed out.
