Back in January, it was reported that Illinois defensive tackle Josh Brent would be spending the spring semester at Parkland College in an attempt to get his academic house in order.
Rumors have been making the rounds over the past couple of weeks that Brent’s failed to clean up his grades, putting his availability for the 2010 season in jeopardy.
Ron Zook, in the midst of visiting troops in the Middle East, has heard the rumors. And, while the head coach has no concrete word that Brent didn’t make the grade, he didn’t sound too confident that he did, either.
“I’ve heard that he did not make it, but I don’t know that for a fact,” Zook told the Champaign News-Gazette. “That’s all I’ve heard from halfway around the world.”
Zook added that he needed to “find out what the whole situation is” with Brent’s academic progress report before speculating on the senior lineman’s future with the program.
In addition to the academic issues, Brent was charged with felony DUI in February of 2009, a charge that was ultimately reduced to a misdemeanor but still resulted in Brent serving 28 days of a 60-day jail sentence last summer.
