Tuberville seeks résumé padding, wants '04 title revote

Given the sanctions handed down by the NCAA earlier today, there exists the possibility that the BcS could strip USC of their 2004 national title.

If that edict were indeed to come down from whatever immoral high ground the BcS has perched themselves upon this time around, one of the head coaches of one of the three schools — USC, Oklahoma, Auburn — that entered the postseason that year undefeated would like the voters to to go all playground on the sh-t and have a do-over.

By way of the Dallas Morning News, former Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville told ESPN‘s Mark Schlabach that he and his former school didn’t raise a fuss at the time but, dadgummit, his Tigers deserve to at least be considered as the default national champions if the Trojans are stripped of their BcS crystal.

“We never complained when they went by the process the last time, and they should go by the process this time,” Tuberville told Schlabach. “If they were ineligible, I think they should have a revote and let people vote on it and decide who they think was the best team that year. If everybody thinks it was Oklahoma, that’s fine. If everybody thinks it was Auburn, that’s fine.”

Seriously, #Tubs, and no offense meant, but shut the hell up.

You are now the head football coach at Texas Tech and are five-and-a-half years removed from that grimy, two-faced, disrespectful organization preventing your undefeated team from rightfully having a shot at the crystal.

That was Jan., 2005; this is June, 2010.  Get over it.  Move on — at least publicly.

I’m sure your current employer and their ongoing legal entanglements would appreciate it.

Oh please. If any of us played at or coached at Auburn or Oklahoma that year or are fans we’d be crying the same thing!!

JT: I hear what you’re typing, but the point is that if USC is stripped of the title, someone should win it, shouldn’t they?
I can’t remember that far back, hell I didn’t know it was Friday until a few minutes ago, but all this proves one point. It was better back in the 70’s and 80’s when “rumors” of cheating didn’t make it much further than the city limits……..
of course, the “ying” to that “yang” is that sites like this wouldn’t be available……
I may have to ponder this conundrum while sipping an adult beverage, post lunch of course…

What’s up with all this “revote” stuff. Why don’t you just give it to #2?

He’s right, and I can’t blame him for speaking out. I don’t think it’s classless, either.

    Hey Mr. Taylor,
Why don’t you SHUT THE HELL UP? Seriously.
Auburn deserves that championship, since they were denied the first time around. You just hate that it would be another SEC team with yet another crown. Get over it. The SEC rules!

  7. booska says: Jun 11, 2010 10:30 AM

No way he should shut up. His team went undefeated in the most competitive conference in the country. If you remember Oklahoma was completely blown out that year it wasn’t a game. Every-time a debate on weather the BCS should or shouldn’t stay I always bring up the SEC team that went undefeated and didnt even get a chance to play for the national championship. So Mr. Taylor why you get of your SEC hatting horse and open up your eyes and see what is completely obvious. If USC cheated they shouldn’t have been allowed to participate. Oklahoma was completely blown out so they don’t count. Auburn is the only undefeated team left so they should get the crown.

I am embarassed for Texas Tech! I know it’s hard for you Tommy…but have some class. And for the rest of the world that doesn’t understand what is going on here….IT”S ABOUT THE MONEY!!!! Don’t kid yourself. If Auburn was awarded the “consolation national title” don’t think for one minute Tommy wouldn’t go running back to “the powers to be” at Auburn University with his hand out DEMANDING his bonus check for winning the National Title! Wake up folks! Tommy doesn’t give a damn about Auburn….all he cares about is his bank account and coaching resume.

Really?? Sorry JT that your favorite college team didn’t sniff a championship that year, but Auburn or Oklahoma deserves to be reocgnized as the national champion. I mean hell, Tubs brings up a good point. Pac 10 title will go to California, The national championship should go to Auburn (in my opinion). I am sure you have never coached a day in your pathetic life JT, but a coach also watches out for his players. And yes, he may not be at that ungreatful unversity anymore, but neither are those players. Yet, the still deserve to be recognized for their accomplishments. Telling a coach who he and his team deserve recognition for remaining undefeated (While NOT cheating), to shut up does more to discredit your opinion then it does to discredit Tuberbille’s. And for the douchebag who said it was about MONEY? Have you met Tommy Tuberbville? I have had many conversations with him and know he is a stand up guy and coach. I am fairly certain that you have had zero interaction with him and can not support your theory whatsover.

Tuberville is a freaking LOSER that can go pound sand. The ’04 USC team would have CRUSHED his little Auburn team. I wouldn’t piss on this clown if he were on fire. He needs to just shut the f#%k up.

  11. Lucky5927 says: Jun 11, 2010 2:02 PM

But could they have done it without cheating in recruiting? Doubt it!

Oh it seems some of you like the obama way lie to win . USC should not only lose the title but also not be able to play the game for 5 years . yes tyhat would almost destroy the program but it would also teach the former players and students a lesson . Do not cheat . It would be a model for the future , .USC does not play the type teams fouins in the SEC Vandy would be 10 2 team each year if Vandy played the same teams that USC plays !!

  13. booska says: Jun 11, 2010 5:14 PM

TonyPSFL – Not with out Reggie Bush who should have been ineligible. USC cheated they put one persons interest ahead of the whole program this is what happens. They should be stripped of thier title. Auburn should be the 04 national champs and should have had a chance to play for it in the first place.

Some of you may not remember what happened in 2004. However, we Auburn people remember it as though it were last year. We have a really good football tradition, but we haven’t won an NC in over 50 years. We were SO good that year. Coach Tuberville has been part of 4 NC teams, and he said that was the best team he has ever been a part of hands down.
Many people less invested than I have told me that Auburn would have had a great chance to beat USC that year. It was bad enough that we didn’t get to play for it, but after Oklahoma was so bad in the NC game, it made us more upset that we never got the chance to prove ourselves.
It would be an NC that is slightly tainted, but it would be no worse than about 5 or 6 of the 13 NC’s that Alabama claims. Some of those were declared NC’s decades after the seasons and by organizations that no one ever heard of.
I have said for the past 20 years that I just want at least one more NC for my beloved tigers before I die. I would rather have one won on the field, and I think our new staff has a chance to earn one. However, I wouldn’t scoff at being revoted the 2004 NC.
As far as Coach Tuberville not caring about Auburn, you are wrong. We had a much needed parting of the ways. He was just a little burned out at Auburn in both recruiting and coaching. However, he is a very good coach, and he cares very deeply about Auburn. I think Auburn did give him a bonus that year for going undefeated, so anything else he has coming would be less than the $300K bonus for an NC. Whatever Auburn would have to pay him, I feel sure the powers that be there would be more than happy to pay it.
WAR EAGLE!! and GO RED RAIDERS and Coach TT. We still love you. You did us proud for almost a decade.

lol! OU would have rolled Auburn, even though USC stomped them.

If Auburn wants the 04 title, then USC should get 2003 and 2007 bc they would have beaten LSU both of those years
