Southern Miss trio arrested, including star WR DeAndre Brown

Yep, it’s that time of the year.

Thursday night, the Hattiesburg American is reporting, three full- or part-time starting members of the Southern Miss football program were arrested following a disturbance at a pool.

Receivers DeAndre Brown and Johdrick Morris and linebacker Martez Smith were charged with disorderly conduct after, the paper wrote, failing to comply with an officer’s attempt to disperse a crowd.  All three were taken to the county jail and later released.

Head coach Larry Fedora was not available for comment.

Brown set a school record for receptions in 2008 with 67, and followed that up with a 47-catch season in 2009.  Morris started five games last season, while Smith started at linebacker for the Golden Eagles and was credited with 82 tackles.

I was afraid that this would end up a more serious offense by Brown, but it looks like a pretty insignificant event.

Reading all the boards the past 3 months leads me to believe we could have an All American Jailbird team at the end of the season–thus embarrassing these so called “fools” that are supposed to be athletes! It might have school presidents, ADs as well as coachs take a 2nd look at the backgrounds before they race to these kids dining room table to have them sign on the dotted line. I think its time has come–track arrests by school & conference as well. Alumni can stand and cheer with pride and dig deep in their pockets to donate even larger sums of $$$ to their alma maters as their schools “all conference jailbirds” are recognized as part of the all conference jailbird team. To give their school and the jailbird even more noteriety they will be then issued a jersy with P-436482 all jailbird jerseys will start with P (prisoner) and be followed by a 6 digit number. Of course after a few yrs we would have to expand to a 7 digit # as we soon would run out of all the combinations of six digit #s.
This post will generate posts ridiculing it(me) but it’s no more absurd than how many college “scholarship athletes” (mostly football) are arrested around the country every yr. Why do we tolerate it? There are enough good players without putting up with thugs, alcoholics, druggies women beaters and the list goes on……
It’s past time to tolerate this insanity any longer.
Each athlete should have to go before a student/faculty/admin board of review (void of any athletic dept people) after ANY incident. Let the school decide how much embarrassment and public ridicule they want to subject themselves to. I love college football and have been to over 100 games in person but I am sick and tired of the criminal element that is so pervasive in college football. Student athletes earned a scholarship, tutoring and preferential treatment because they live in the athleic dorms but they
ARE NOT ENTITLED to run roughshod over college campuses and the surrounding communities. Give us a break!!!!!!!!!!!
