After completing his redshirt sophomore season at Stanford this year, quarterback Andrew Luck would be eligible for the 2011 NFL draft.
Already, there’s talk that if Luck decided to make himself available, he could potentially be a top-ten pick depending on his performance on the field for the Cardinal in 2010.
That’s all well and good, but the speculation is predicated on Luck actually leaving eligibility on the table and making the early leap. Fortunately for fans of the program, it appears that, right now, Luck’s near future will be at the Pac-10 school.
By way of Rivals.com’s Stanford website, Luck -- son of new West Virginia athletic director Oliver Luck -- said in a recent radio interview that his mind is not really on the NFL at this moment and he plans to stay with the Cardinal until he graduates.
“I honestly don’t think about it that much,” Luck said when asked about his NFL plans. “I still consider myself a pretty young guy. I need to get a degree in college before I start thinking about stuff. I will probably stay in school for sure.”
Of course, there are a little over six months between now and and the mid-January deadline for draft-eligible players to declare their NFL intentions, which means there’s plenty of time for Luck to change his mind. At least for now, though, Luck plans on eschewing the money-green pastures of pro football for the cardinal and white.
Check back in half a year, however. We think there’s a chance Luck’s “for sure” may not be as sure once the upcoming season ends.
