Once-prized in-state recruit Porzel leaving the Terps

The whole of Terrapin Nation was quite the enthusiastic bunch in early 2009 when running back Caleb Porzel decided in 2009 to keep his football talent in-state and play for Maryland.

At the time, head coach Ralph Friedgen gushed over Porzel’s signing, saying that “when you see this kid, he’s going to take your breath away… I am happy he is playing for us.”

A year-and-a-half and less than 100 yards later, The Porzel Era at Maryland has come to an end.

According to both the Baltimore Sun and Washington Post, Porzel has left the program and is no longer enrolled in school.

Academic issues are apparently at the root of the sophomore’s decision to transfer; Porzel missed most of spring practice as he was concentrating on academics.  As of yet, there’s no word on where he may ultimately transfer.

Porzel played in seven games last season, rushing for 75 yards on 30 carries.
