RIP Assassin: Ohio State great Jack Tatum dead at the age of 61

We have some unfortunate news to bring this afternoon as 10TV in Columbus is reporting that Ohio State legend Jack Tatum has passed away at the age of 61.

Tatum’s died of a heart attack, and his death was confirmed by former Buckeye teammate John Hicks.

While Tatum, nicknamed the Assassin for his ferocious hits on the football field, is probably more well-known for his time with the Oakland Raiders -- as well as the hit that left New England Patriots wide receiver Darryl Stingley paralyzed -- he was also one of the greatest college players of his time.

Tatum was named first-team All-Big Ten from 1968-1970, and was a first-team All-American the last two years. He finished seventh in the voting for the 1970 Heisman Trophy.

He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2005.

Our condolences go out to Tatum’s family and friends for their loss.

UPDATED 1:54 p.m. ET: Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel has released a statement on Tatum’s passing.

“We have lost one of our greatest Buckeyes. When you think of Ohio State defense, the first name that comes to mind is Jack Tatum. His loss touches every era of Ohio State players and fans.”
