Nutt given permission to ramp-up Masoli pursuit

It’s been, what, fours hours or so since our last update on the Jeremiah Masoli-Ole Miss situation? So, yeah, we’re due for another one.

The latest on the slowly-evolving situation comes from George Schroeder of the Eugene Register-Guard, who spoke with Houston Nutt Wednesday morning and wrote that the Rebels head coach has been given permission by his administration to pursue the logistical aspects of getting Masoli to Oxford.

In other words, it appears the higher-ups at the university have given Nutt two big thumbs-up for a hot-and-heavy pursuit of the former Oregon quarterback.

Still, Nutt attempted to tap the brakes on the rampant speculation by saying Masoli coming into his football program is not a done deal.

“We’re just looking into the entire situation, from the background, to his (academic) transcripts, to his graduation (from Oregon) to graduate school--the whole bit,” Nutt told Schroeder over the phone. “We’ve made no determination.”

In another revelation that the pursuit of Masoli has ramped-up, Nutt said he spoke to his counterpart at Oregon, Chip Kelly, this morning for the first time regarding Kelly’s former quarterback. It had previously been reported that Nutt had spoken to Ducks offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich, and Nutt has also acknowledged having several conversations with Masoli himself.

Nutt also told the paper that he doesn’t expect a resolution to come for “a couple of days.”

UPDATED 1:46 p.m. ET: Just to drive home the potential timeline, Nutt told Kyle Veazey of the Jackson Clarion-Ledger that he hopes the situation is resolved “by the weekend” before adding “you just don’t know.”
