The Big Ten and Pac-10 end (sometimes, now) their respective college football season in Pasadena’s Rose Bowl.
If Larry Scott and other have their way, that’s the way the two conferences will start their seasons in the future as well.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Pac-10 and Rose Bowl officials are in the discussion stage regarding an annual game that would kickoff the college football season on the West Coast. Specifically, the two sides are looking at the possibility of pitting a school from the Pac-10 against a school from the Big Ten.
Commissioner Scott confirmed the discussions, but also warned that it’s far from a done deal.
“The Pac-10 has a tradition of playing some really tough out-of-conference games early on,” Scott said. “We love the Rose Bowl relationship. …
“There’s a lot to think through. I would only want to do it if it wouldn’t tarnish what it means to play in the Rose Bowl. This is hallowed turf.”
Don’t know about you guys, but this women’s tennis CEO-turned-commissioner is really starting to grow on me. I truly appreciate out-of-the-box thinking, especially when it involves potentially putting quality non-conference match-ups on the field and on our televisions.
That’s nice.
It’s always a good idea to copy the SEC as much as possible so good for him and the PAC-whatever
It would be nice to see some PAC-10 schools come east for a Big Ten matchup for a change. It hardly ever happens, especially with USC.
It would be hilarious (well, okay, mildly amusing) if it turns out to be Nebraska-Colorado.
Great idea, but wrong location. It needs to be played in Green Bay or Detroit every year.
Arizona and USC came to Big 10 country last season, schiver. In fact, there have been quite a few home-and-home matchups between the two conferences in the last decade.
Why not alternating between the Rose Bowl and say Soldier Field/Ford Field/Lucas Oil? Otherwise the Pac-10/12 gets a home game every time plus a home game for a bowl.
I feel like Larry Scott and Jim Delany never watch South Park.
Let’s expand to 12 teams so WE can have a Championship Game.
– The SEC did it! The SEC did it 18 years ago!
Let’s play a Kick-Off Game against our rival conference to start the year in the biggest city in our region.
– The SEC did it! The SEC has the Chik-Fil-A Kick-Off in Atlanta every year!
I mean, come on. I know imitation is the highest form of flattery, but this is getting ridiculous. Haha.
If you can’t beat the best, try and become a pale imitation of the best, I guess. Hahahahaha.
LOL… gotta laugh at sweepthleg and Bug Killer…
These guys actually think the SEC was a trail-blazer for conference championships and opening kick-off classics….
Really guys, really?? Remember, you guys are from the South… remember?? That area of American that is backwards, not innovative and old-fashioned… thats you – don’t forget it.
The Pac-10 had north/south conference championships in the Rose Bowl back in the 20′s, 30′s and 40′s… pitting UW against SC and Seattle U and Wittman U against Cal… look it up… this is years before the NCAA came in and changed things in the 50′s and 60′s.
And your “alleged” kick-off classic – get this straight… is only because the SEC had such weak OCC schedules… it was a way for the SEC to show some more legitemacy by trying to schedule harder foes… you basically stumbled upon the idea….
Don’t even think you are blazing any trail other than being the first to have 12 teams in a league… THATS IT!! And you’re still backwards in all other walks of life as well…
If you really want to be ground-breaking – schedule your TOP teams against the PAC’s TOP teams…
Oh, thats right… you guys won’t do that!!!!
This isn’t related but John, how about picking apart this subject that was talked about on ESPN: for the good of the SEC, Vandy must go ala Chicago left the Big 10. Should they and who do they replace them with?
LA Douche
I love how people who consider themselves “progressive,” like those on the Left Coast are always the first to show their extreme prejudices and stereotypical attitudes.
How about this:
Your conference sucks. The reason why you “travel” so many miles to play OOC games is because there is NO BCS Conference School within 1000 MILES of your pathetic conference.
Whereas in the SEC, we share much of the same region with the ACC and Big East (in four cases, the same state). So we DON’T have to cross rivers or fly 1000 miles to play OOC opponents.
For instance, for Georgia, Clemson and Georgia Tech are within 90 miles.
The whole thing about SEC OOC schedules being a joke is false. Yeah, we’ll play a SunBelt team or even a 1-AA team, but trust us, that’s not any worse than the bottom of the WAC or MWC (like Idaho, NM State, etc.).
So try to feel secure in your false (very false) sense of superiority. ‘Cause you’re gonna need it as your conference descends into the bottom half of the BCS because the one decent (SEC-like) football team you had danced too close to the fire letting agents and marketing reps roam free through their team.
I mean, come on, your Champion last year lost to the Slowhio State Suckeyes. THE SUCKEYES!!!
Hahaha.
Ohio State can match or exceed anybody in the number of players that made it to the NFL. I guess that proves there are a lot of slow professionals. OSU is 4-3 in BCS games. I guess 4-3 against the top teams in the country warrents being called the “Suckeyes.” OSU has played for the National Championship 3 times this century and is 1 of only 9 teams to hold a title this century. I guess this is more proof that OSU sucks.
@ LA DawgMan
Every Pac 10 school plays 3 cripples & some play 1 toughie.
SEC is the same–normally 3 cripples & a toughie.
Almost all schools play the cripples at home and if they have a toughie it is a home & home series.
Alabama plays Penn State
Florida plays FSU
Georgia plays Georgia Tech
LSU plays West Virginia
Tennessee plays Oregon
My point is it’s all basically the same. The teams in the bottom of the Pac 10 & SEC try NOT to play ANY toughies so they can use the cripples to become bowl eligible. The teams at the top of the conferences use the 3 cripples to fill their athletic funds with very profitable home games. They also can afford that one tough game to satisfy their alums and the TV contract people. It’s a business and the ADs run these as just that–because football pays almost all of the athletic dept expenses for every sport the schools field a team for.
I get so tired of this OOC argument. Most SEC fans argue that the SEC is a tougher conference–whether it is or isn’t doesn’t matter. The finances are the driving force and economically it’s good business to do this. These schools also like that one tough home and home because it is a good recruiting tool. Florida’s is with FSU–you say they don’t leave the state–try playing in Doak Campbell they loathe the Gators. It is a great recruiting game for the Gators, in the panhandle of Florida.
That OOC argument doesn’t fly for any conference against any other when you really drill down into each conferences overall schedules……
@LA Dawgman
You don’t think they are copying the SEC and ACC?
Okay 80 years ago the PAC whoever played somebody else no one remembers or cares about. I got it the Idea of a Kickoff game isn’t new but pitting Name brand teams against one another to open the season IS!
And if you want to be fair it probably wasnt the SEC or ACC that came up with it, but the guys in charge 0f the Georgia Dome. The money generated from TV review and Advertising for the Chick fil A is what will eventually get us a playoff. Once the assholes at the NCAA and Universities realize their is more money to be made in a playoff format then that’s when we will get it. The kickoff games are another step in that direction.
But your “soccer is the real football” like defense of your Pac-nobodyreallycares is quaint. Now that USC is back down because of sanctions you guys can look forward to another 10 years of nobody really caring about you.
mdtrojan
schiver. you dumb ass. USC travels all the time to big named schools. How about The Ohio State U. Best team in the big 10. Think before you commit.
“There’s a lot to think through. I would only want to do it if it wouldn’t tarnish what it means to play in the Rose Bowl. This is hallowed turf.”
They shouldn’t have let ucla play their home games there if it is such hallowed turf. think they’ve done enough tarnishing that you might call it the wilted rose bowl.
besides, they also use that place for flea markets and spiritual church rallies. i guess that’s hallowed.
Bugkiller you’re an idiot. Suckeyes? Really? Funny how you fail to mention your school. Apparently you’re dimwitted and you know it because you know that if you mention you’re school then those opposed to your point of view will rip you a new one. Now back to your “Suckeyes” comment… The Buckeyes have won 10 or more games in every year except one this decade. Those same Buckeyes have earned the right to 3 BCS National Championship games. Those same Buckeyes begin every year in the top ten. Those same Buckeyes are 4-3 in BCS Bowl Games. Those same Buckeyes are a nationally prominent football team that can bring 15-20K fans to a west coast game. In case you’re too stupid to know geography that’s close to 2400k miles from Columbus Ohio. Those same Buckeyes pack the Shoe with over 100k fans every home game. Those same Buckeyes are in the top 3 of all NCAA teams this decade for number of wins. Now, s#!t for brains, how about your team?
@ Miuelito
For the record those same Buckeyes were:
0-3 in BCS Championship games
Ties for 4th not in the Top 3 in wins in 2000′s
Weren’t even in the top 10 in 90s or 80s
Here’s the 2000s:
Rank School Winning percentage Wins Losses
1 Boise State .868 112 17
2 Texas .859 110 18
3 Oklahoma .821 110 24
4 Ohio State .803 102 25
5 USC .797 102 26
6 Florida .769 100 30
7 Texas Christian .766 95 29
8 LSU .762 99 31
9 Georgia .760 98 31
10 Virginia Tech .756 99 32
