‘Forlorn’ Neuheisel loses Datone Jones to bad break

UCLA’s front seven was hit hard this offseason by graduation and Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year Brian Price leaving a year of eligibility on the table and bolting for the NFL.

Now, that group has taken yet another big hit.

What the Los Angeles Daily News described as a “forlorn” head coach Rick Neuheisel announced this afternoon that starting defensive end Datone Jones broke his right foot during practice Tuesday. X-rays confirmed the kind of break the Bruins simply did not need at this point in time.

There was no specific timetable for Jones’ return, although Neuheisel guessed that the lineman could be out until at least October.

Jones, who started all 13 games a true sophomore in 2009, will likely be replaced in the lineup by Nate Chandler.
