Spurrier on UNC’s Blake: ‘It’s hard to hide whatever your reputation is’

Yahoo! Sports reported Monday that North Carolina defensive line coach John Blake‘s relationship with agent Gary Wichard has become the focus of attention for NCAA investigators.

According to South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier, that article should’ve come as a surprise to no one.

Spurrier’s program has been caught in the NCAA’s investigative web that was first spun at UNC, with Gamecocks tight end Weslye Saunders -- a good friend of UNC defensive tackle Marvin Austin, who’s seemingly become the straw that’s stirring this probe -- having been questioned by investigators regarding a trip to South Beach this past Memorial Day weekend.

Perhaps because his program has become a part of this agent mess, Spurrier stepped into the way-back machine, channeled the Ol’ Ball Coach, and took a subtle hatchet to Blake’s reputation around the coaching community as only he can. Or used to be able to.

“When you’ve been in coaching as long as I have, we know the reputation of almost all the coaches that have been around a long time,” Spurrier said Tuesday. “We all have a reputation, especially guys who’ve coached 20 years or so. It’s hard to hide whatever your reputation is.”
