BYU freshman Jake Heaps impresses at scrimmage

BYU has a rich tradition in producing great quarterbacks, from Ty Detmer to Steve Young. Could freshman Jake Heaps of Sammamish, WA be next? If the Cougar’s first scrimmage Saturday is any indication, the answer is yes.

Heaps went 10 of 20 for 156 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown pass to receiver McKay Jacobson, in front of thousands of BYU faithful.. The touchdown capped off an impressive drive for any quarterback, let alone a freshman. Heaps went 5 of 6 for 85 yards as part of a 96 yard drive.

Clearly, it is still early in the preseason and there will be many more days to compete, but the six-foot-two, 205 lb. freshman has been nothing short of impressive during his short time in Provo.

BYU opens their season Sept. 4 at home against Washington. Coincidentally, it was the hometown Huskies who lost out on Heaps to the Cougars when the senior was being recruited out of Skyline High School.
