It was reported late Monday night that Oklahoma linebacker Austin Box was day to day with some type of a back issue.
Unfortunately for the Sooners, that’s no longer the case.
According to the Twitter feed of Tulsa World‘s John Hoover, head coach Bob Stoops said Tuesday that Box will be out for 3-6 weeks due to a disk issue in his back. Stoops added that the injury was not the result of Box taking a hit, but rather “something that flared up.”
Based on that timeline, it would seem a near-certainty that the junior will miss the regular-season opener against Utah State and could conceivably, based on the long end of the prognosis, could be out until the Big 12 opener against Texas Oct. 2.
Box, who has started six games the past two seasons, has been in a competition with redshirt freshman Tom Wort for the starting job at middle linebacker.
