Arizona State narrows QB battle to two

After several months of competing, Arizona State appears to be closer to naming a starting quarterback for 2010. Coach Dennis Erickson has narrowed the battle down to junior Steven Threet and sophomore Brock Osweiler. The two have been competing against junior Samson Szakacsy, who started the last two games of 2009.

But when Szakacsy missed the entire spring due to shoulder surgery and preaseason practices due to arm fatigue, Threet and Osweiler became the front-runners for the Sun Devils.

Erickson could name a starter after this Saturday’s scrimmage at Sun Devil Stadium. Osweiler has been more consistent, but Threet, a transfer from Michigan, has been gaining momentum this August. In Wednesday’s practice, Threet composed two touchdown drives and showed improvement in making his reads.

“Every quarterback I’ve been around it just takes awhile to get used to what you’re hanging your hat on and what we’re doing offensively,” Erickson said. “He’s got a quick release, and he has a hell of an arm. He just needs to continue to get more accurate.”

Erickson expects to have a starter named for the Sun Devils’ Sept. 4 opener against Portland State.
