First-place Boise St. vote came from surprising source

While Alabama was, as expected, Standing Ovation.jpg

BRAV-FREAKING-O, Mr. Giglio.  Well played, sir.  I could not be more thrilled that, one, you stepped outside the box and, two, by stepping out of said box you really, really pissed off some closed-minded, miserable individuals who deserve to walk around today with a self-shoved stick up their vote.

Is Boise State the best team in the country right now?  I don’t know; haven’t a clue.  And neither does Giglio, or you or any other voter/media member in the country for that matter.

Preseason polls are a joke, but not nearly as much as those who decry schools like Boise State from getting theirs.

    Its about time!
Football is football: a game played on the field and not in a microporcessor…or should I say in this case: “mockroprocessor” for the hole the BCS system has torn in the fabric of fair play.
For all we can tell from the monied school favored BCS system, many worthy teams and players have never been seen by the public eye.
    Thank you. Mr. Giglio!

Boise State losses to Va Tech week 1 and they will be out of it.

I remember when one Arizona voter held out all year for Alabama and everyone said that he was nuts not to vote for Miami and then he had the last laugh.

    Virginia Tech is a joke.
Boise State will be your 2010 National Champions.
    The End.

VaTech will lower the boom on Boise St.

Top that off with 2 weeks later Oregon St goes to Boise & beats them up on that gimmick blue field of theirs.

    Welcome to the big time…..

Well Done Joe Giglio. A team that ended in the top 5 that returns 20 starters is definitely a good choice. Bama is right there, but don’t count the Broncos out. They beat a really good TCU team in the bowl and have been “For Real” for several years. They don’t have “BCS” status, but so what?

Boise State has BEATEN Oregon State the last two times that they’ve played in Boise. Given the fact that they’ve laid the boom on Oregon the last two times that they’ve played and took Oklahoma to school, Virginia Tech doesn’t scare them, either (Let’s not forget that the Hokies lost to East Carolina two years ago so it’s not like they haven’t stumbled against a so-called inferior opponent).

    Say it is so…Joe……
Remember last season, Boise State beat the best team from Texas…starting quarterback included!

I guess I agree with your reasoning that preseason polls are a crapshoot, but I still don’t think BSU has any business receiving 1st-place votes when last year’s national champ is returning most of their team intact, including the reigning Heisman Trophy winner. This is aside from the fact that you have three big-time powers (OSU, Texas, Florida) right behind them if you’re not buying ‘Bama’s rep.
Fighting off the midseason upsets for 6-7 games is what makes a national champ, not a team that wins a few big games and then rolls over a bunch of mediocre programs.
Sorry, Bronco Nation, but it is what it is.

Boise has a pretty good “poor me” scam going, schedule a good team right off the bat so you have weeks to prepare for your only good opponent, roll through easy schedule no one actually watches on the duece, (really they only beat Tulsa by 7?) then have weeks to prepare for bowl opponent, cry about no respect, while other teams, you know, earn it.

    @ edgy
What you said is true–but last yr, 2 yrs ago, a decade ago is ancient history. Schools will be ready for them now.
Most schools have to worry about their conf schedules to go anywhere…Boise only has to get ready for 1 or 2 OOC games because their conf sched is crap!!!!
They need to dramatically upgrade their facilities and stadium. They would need to play a BCS schedule and be a regular fixture on TV. For all these things to happen, they would need to move into a BCS conference so they would have the cred they need.
I love what Boise is doing, they are a fun team but if they had to play in a “real” conference they would get beat up. They don’t have quality depth and aren’t a “FULL TIME” big time school yet.

@Sam – I totally agree. I know all of the arguments for Boise State but it still doesn’t set right with me that they have an amazingly cake schedule pretty much the entire year. The SEC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac 10, etc beat the ever living snot out of each other through conference play and Boise State is playing nothing but cream puffs. If Alabama, Ohio State and Boise State all go undefeated – there is no doubt in my eyes what two teams deserve to go to the dance and would be pissed if Boise State got the nod.
On a side note – they really need to get rid of that ridiculously hideous blue carpet.

It’s no coincidence that Boise has won those games, they were actually the better TEAM. Let’s not forget that the Big 8 used be known as Oklahoma and the Little 7 and that didn’t keep them from winning a few national championships.
Boise can’t help their schedule and that’s the reason for the jump to the MWC. They’re NOT afraid of anyone and they’ll play any team, any where, at any time but don’t expect to see too many teams playing them in Boise because the 32,000+ stadium isn’t worth the trip.
Now, unless they plan on a move to the Pac-35, they’d be stupid to spend a lot to expand their stadium past 40,000. In order to get more BCS schools outside of the Pac-10ish to come to their facilities, they’re going to have to expand to 50,000+ and there aren’t enough BCS teams out there that are willing to go to Boise to get humiliated to justify that expense. An upgrade of the MWC to BCS status would give them a BCS schedule and frankly, with BYU and TCU, their top 3 are as good as any in the BCS while Fresno State has been making life hard for Pac-10 schools for years and they have several up and coming schools like Idaho and Nevada.
Put away your Big Bigot attitudes and take a look at the landscape in the BCS and you’ll actually start seeing that there are ARTIFICIAL champions being crowded yearly in one BCS conference or another because SOMEONE has to win.

Boise State deserved the number one vote, hell they probably deserved three or four. They return 20 starters this year, plus their kicker and punter. Alabama is in the middle of rebuilding (reloading?) their defense and certainly deserves their spot, but it’s silly to think the Broncos don’t deserve a few votes here and there.
As for Boise State’s schedule . . . . they’ve been trying to schedule quality opponents for the last few years, and have been turned down by a few programs. Yes, they play in a crappy conference, but they are fixing that. Boise State doesn’t have the academics to qualify for a PAC-10 or Big 10 spot, so they make due.
It’s not like Florida ever schedules a difficult game in the lead in their to SEC slate.
