North Carolina self-reports infractions to NCAA

Academic infractions, that is.

In the midst of an investigation by the NCAA into a couple/several/baker’s dozen of their players, North Carolina now has yet another issue on their off-field plate.

According to Scout.com‘s UNC website, UNC officials have uncovered academic issues involving several players, players who were apparently banished to the scout team during practice Wednesday as a result of the findings. The names of the players involved in this particular situation were not given by the website.

UNC has been working in concert with the NCAA on their investigation into the relationships several players may or may not have had with agents and, during the course of the probe, uncovered issues pertaining to a tutor. No additional details were given.

The good news? UNC self-reported the potential violations to the NCAA. The bad news? There were additional issues to self-report in the first place.

It’s unclear how this will affect the investigation by the NCAA, and whether it will have any bearing on a player or players being available for the season opener and beyond.

UPDATED 3:52 p.m. ET: Here’s a portion of a press release from the university sent out a short while ago:

The University of North Carolina will hold a press conference at 7:30 p.m. tonight to provide an update on the NCAA investigation... and will include Chancellor Holden Thorp, Director of Athletics Dick Baddour and head football coach Butch Davis.

Davis’ regularly scheduled time with the press this afternoon was cancelled.

Additionally, what was scheduled to be an open practice for the first 30 minutes has been closed to the media.
