Pair of Gophers suspended for opener

Minnesota caught a huge break when their opponent for the opener, Middle Tennessee State, had suspended their outstanding dual-threat quarterback Dwight Dasher for at least the first three games of the season.

Tuesday, the Gophers gave back a (very) little bit of that advantage.

Starting safety Kyle Theret and offensive lineman Dom Alford have both been suspended by head coach Tim Brewster for the opener against the Blue Raiders.

Theret’s suspension is a result of an arrest for drunk driving back in March; Alford was suspended for violating unspecified team rules.

The senior Theret started 13 games in 2009 and has 18 for his career.
