Tre Newton named starting running back for Longhorns

Just one day after the Austin-American Statesman reported that Texas would be sticking with Cody Johnson at running back, the Dallas Morning News reports today that Tre Newton will be named starter. Texas hosts Wyoming in Week Two on Sept. 11.

The decision was shown in the latest depth chart released Monday and was the only significant adjustment made from the previous two-deep.

Newton, a sophomore from Southlake Carroll High School in Dallas, had 18 carries for 61 yards and two touchdowns against Rice in Houston. Johnson officially started for the Longhorns on Saturday and got out of the gate quickly with runs of 18, 9, 7 and 6 yards on Texas’ first drive.

However, later in the drive inside Rice’s 5-yard line, Johnson was unable to penetrate the endzone four on consecutive attempts.

Johnson, a junior, was the feel-good story of the offseason for Texas as the former “class clown” of the team made serious adjustments to his diet and work ethic.
