Houston, we have a major problem: Keenum, his backup out for the season

As bad as the situation may have seemed with just an embarrassing 31-13 loss to UCLA lingering on the palate, things just got exponentially less tasty for the Houston Cougars.

Or more to the point, Kevin Sumlin should be excused for throwing up a little bit in his mouth at any point in the near future.

According to multiple reports, Houston has lost quarterback and Heisman Trophy contender Case Keenum for the season due to an ACL tear. Keenum injured the knee attempting to make a tackle following an interception in the loss to the Bruins.

As if that wasn’t a big enough kick to the nether regions, the Cougars also lost backup Cotton Turner to a season-ending clavicle injury suffered in the same game.

“I am very disappointed for both these young men,” Sumlin said. “It’s hard to see them hurting right now. They both are a big part of this team and wanted to be contributors to its success this season. I think they can still do that with their off-field leadership.”

With both Keenum and Turner officially done for the season, the keys to Houston’s high-powered offense will likely be handed over to true freshman Terrance Broadway.

Broadway completed 5-of-8 passes for 84 yards and a touchdown after the first two players ahead of him on the depth chart went down Saturday.

According to reports, Houston will look into a medical redshirt for Keenum.
