Michigan St. TE charged in scheme to steal, sell $160K worth of laptops

A Michigan State football player has found himself in some serious legal hot water Tuesday for his role in a scheme to steal over 100 laptops belonging to the Detroit Public School System.

According to the Detroit News, tight end Dion Sims was charged with one count of receiving and concealing stolen property in a months-long probe that netted a total of ten arrests.

A gang that willingly goes by the name “Helly Helly Bois” was allegedly responsible for the theft of 104 laptops valued at $158,800 from the school system. Many of the stolen laptops, which were sold on eBay and Craigslist among other places, have been recovered in several states, as well as Canada and the United Arab Emirates.

Sims has been under investigation since February, a fact Michigan State was aware of. The sophomore has been suspended indefinitely in the wake of the charge against him.

“During his indefinite suspension, Dion will continue to have access to all of the available resources in the Clara Bell Smith Student-Athlete Academic Center,” Athletic Director Mark Hollis said in a statement. “We will allow the legal process to play out before we make any final decision regarding his future status with the team.”

Last season, Sims had 13 receptions for 133 yards and three touchdowns for the Spartans.
