Georgia, Oregon mutually agree to cancel future series

Thanks in part to expansion in Oregon’s conference, and Georgia’s desire for seven home games a year, the two schools have announced they have mutually agreed to cancel a future series.

A home-and-home series was agreed upon in 2006, with games to be played in Eugene in 2015 and Athens in 2016.

Shortly after coming on board as Georgia’s athletic director in August, Greg McGarity spoke to his counterpart at Oregon about canceling the series. Rob Mullens expressed an interest in ridding themselves of the series as well, leading to today’s announcement that the series between the two high-profile football programs has been shelved.

It worked out great. Both schools just said this is something we don’t need to worry about anymore,” McGarity said.

“We’re getting back at 6 a.m. Sunday morning, and we’ve got a big game to prepare for the next day. It’d just be like you or me getting back. You’re not gonna sleep on the plane, I don’t care what you say. So you really lose a day. You’re gonna be worn out already.”

The Bulldogs still have future home-and-homes scheduled with Louisville (2011-2012) and Clemson (2013-2014).

Again, though, the biggest reason for McGarity getting out from under the series with the Ducks is his desire to have seven home games in every year possible.

“Every now and then I think it’s important to play a rival, like Clemson. I think that’s a great series,” McGarity said. “But you don’t do that every year. I think you pick and choose. And every now and then you can get by with six home games. But that should really only be one time in a decade.
