And cue the ‘fire Greg Davis’ demands for Texas

Light the torches and wrangle up the mob. The anti-Greg Davis movement is coming on strong (again). The much-maligned offensive coordinator for Texas has faced some unkind words this season, but now the chants for a different direction are getting even louder.

Losing 28-21 to Iowa State was like ripping off a scab for Texas. It’s painful, but it also shows the wound that lies beneath. Even with Texas’ 34-17 win over Rice in week one, there were glaring wounds with the Longhorns’ offense.

No running game. No o-line. Questionable play-calling. The list goes on.

Eight weeks later, those weaknesses haven’t been fixed at all. Maybe it was Maybelline, but the win over Nebraska a week ago merely covered up Texas’ offensive struggles. In no way did it fix them.

So, today, when Texas fell at the hands of what was supposed to be a vastly inferior opponent, familiar grumbles reverberated through Texas’ capital city.

The Longhorns were simply out-played and out-coached and therein lies the problem.

Davis didn’t make Garret Gilbert throw three interceptions, but he was responsible for only six points through three quarters and an abysmal showing in the redzone. Texas actually out-gained Iowa State on offense by 80 yards, but points matter most and, in the end, Texas didn’t have enough of them.

Statistically, Iowa State had one of the worst defenses coming into today’s game. The Cyclones ranked 104th in points allowed, but luckily for them, Texas’ offense has been equally as bad.

Let’s be clear: Texas’ media-anointed “defense of the millennium” didn’t do much to help the cause today, either. Still, the offense at some point has to win some games. That’s something they haven’t been able to prove yet and it’s something they may not.

Perhaps the scab will reform over Texas’ wounds; the Longhorns will certainly be licking them today. Just how long, though, will it be before the scab is ripped off again?
