Name to remember in Gophers’ coaching search is... Randy Shannon?

In the two-plus weeks since Tim Brewster was relieved of his duties as the head football coach at Minnesota, several names have been bandied about as potential replacements. Mike Leach, Mark Mangino, Scott Linehan and Marc Trestman among others have all been mentioned as possible successors to the Gopher gridiron throne.

The “Tubby” KSTP-TV’s Joe Schmit refers to is Tubby Smith, the current head basketball head coach at Minnesota’s who athletic director Joel Maturi was able to “pry” away from Kentucky back in March of 2007.

Would Maturi be able make lightning strike twice at Minnesota by “stealing” Randy Shannon from the Miami Hurricanes? Our first instinct when we got word of this tweet this morning was a hearty “hell no” and, after talking with a couple of people who would know throughout the day, we’re fairly certain there’s almost no chance Shannon would leave Miami for Minnesota unless he had no other choice.

That being said, nothing much these days would surprise us, so we won’t completely dismiss the Shannon-to-Gophers talk. Although, we’ll make sure we have a full tank of oxygen at the ready as we’re holding our breath.
