On the same day Colorado announced the formation of a group charged with finding a new coach, one of the confirmed candidates for the head-coaching vacancy acknowledged contact with the university.
It should come as no surprise who the candidate is; Bill McCartney has publicly admitted interest in the job, and athletic director Mike Bohn said at the press conference announcing Dan Hawkins’ dismissal that McCartney “is a viable candidate for us to consider.”
McCartney, who was the Buffaloes’ head coach through the 1994 season — his last coaching job, incidentally — told the Denver Post Wednesday that CU has contacted him about the opening. McCartney is the second confirmed candidate contacted by the school; late last week, former Oregon coach Mike Bellotti told the same paper that he had already spoken to the university.
In other CU coaching news, the university announced this afternoon the formation of a seven-member search committee. Dr. David Clough, CU’s Faculty Athletics Representative and long-time faculty member, will chair the committee.
The committee is charged with seeking candidates to replace Hawkins. Committee members will study and evaluate detailed information on candidates, and recommend one or more to Bohn, who as the “hiring authority” is not a member of committee per university policy. The committee will also participate in interviews with candidates.
“I am pleased to be able to serve the University as the chair of the search committee for our head football coach and look forward to collaborating with this group of outstanding individuals,” Clough said. ”I am certain the committee will endeavor to represent the diverse interests of University’s students, faculty, staff and administration and the public in the course and outcome of the search.
“We will strive to present to the director of athletics and the chancellor recommendations that will lead to the hiring of the best possible candidate for head coach, an individual who will lead the program to success in the coming years in a way that will engender pride in all supporters of the University of Colorado.”
Hire Al golden from Temple.
Brady Hoke is a natural choice. He’s turned around Ball State and San Diego State. He’s recruited in both Pac-10 (12?) country in his current job and as an Oregon State assistant in the 80s and nationally as Ball State’s coach and a Michigan assistant. Also, he’d be relatively cheap compared to some names being thrown around.
70-year old Bill McCartney is a horrible choice. This isn’t a Bill Snyder situation, McCartney hasn’t coached at any level in 16 years. The game has changed too much in that time.
