Rumors swirling around 2011 Boise State-UGA kickoff game

Boise State is already scheduled to open the 2011 season against a team from the SEC.  As rumor has it, the Broncos are on the verge of ditching that school… in favor of a school from the same conference.

While there’s nothing official as of yet, it appears very likely that Boise State and Georgia will open the 2011 regular season in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff game.  Talks have been ongoing between the two schools to take part in the game staged at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome, and a BSU source has told CFT that all that’s left “is basically hammering out the details with ESPN.”  If this game comes off as rumored, it would be the second time this century the two schools have opened a football season against each other; in 2005, the Bulldogs throttled the Broncos 48-13 at Sanford Stadium.

Obviously, though, both schools already have ’11 openers scheduled — Boise State against Ole Miss and Georgia versus Louisville — and those contracts need to be taken into account as well.

Ole Miss athletic director Pete Boone wrote on Twitter Thursday morning that there was “a big football schedule announcement today“, but later apologized for a delay in the announcement due to “a lot of moving parts” involving ESPN.  Louisville associate AD Kenny Klein told the Macon Telegraph yesterday afternoon that he’s heard rumblings of a schedule change, but there was nothing definitive as of yet and the Cardinals were still scheduled to play the Bulldogs in September of 2011.

When he met with the media after the rumored BSU-UGA game really bubbled to the surface, UGA head coach Mark Richt played coy when questioned about the speculation surrounding next year’s opener.  The coach did, however, give a hint that an announcement could be forthcoming the first of next week, if not sooner.

I’ll tell you Monday,” Richt said when asked about the impact of SEC teams playing in the kickoff game.

UGA athletic director Greg McGarity told the Athens Banner-Herald he “just can’t comment” on the speculation.

Barring an unexpected collapse of the talks, though, an announcement of an agreement between the two schools to open the 2011 season should be in the offing in very short order.  And then the AQ elitists can once again commence their patented wailing and gnashing of teeth because the Broncos are “only” playing Georgia and aren’t scheduling Alabama or LSU or Florida pre-2010 or…

    If Boise would drop down to D2 they would have a much better chance getting an SEC team on their schedule.

  2. blitz4848 says: Nov 19, 2010 10:22 AM

    The Dawgs will take care of business in this game and Boise will be out of the NC discussion quickly next yr.

    @Trojan

    This time you had to really reachhhh to get a shot in at the SEC. They are ALREADY on the Ole MISS
    schedule so your shot was kinda stupid…..dah

  3. edgy says: Nov 19, 2010 10:58 AM

    Rumor has it that they approached the Gators but at the last moment, someone in the administration looked at an atlas and saw that it wasn’t in Florida.

  4. floridaconservative says: Nov 19, 2010 10:59 AM

    Sounds like BYU will be travelling to Mississippi, according to sources.

  5. gncnew says: Nov 19, 2010 11:02 AM

    Ole Miss is terrible and not getting any better. They’re going down the road all Nutt teams do eventually.

    I’m glad BSU isn’t going to play a SEC bottom feeder and then get hype for it.

    This should be a very good “test” to see if they can actually hang or if they’re just pretenders.

    I guess you didn’t read that part or maybe just read the titles not the articles before you comment.

    Well it’s a good game for both, being a big UGA fan I look forward to what are team will be able to do now that the QB has a year under his belt. My main concern will be the Defense, yeah they’ve been under the 3-4 system for little over a year however, I don’t know if they’ll have the players who fit in that 3-4 system. Just my observation.

    Should be a Shootout…Kellen Moore vs Aaron Murray

    I agree with you 100%

    if they and utah would schedule someone in the big ten, 12 ,acc,sec or even the big east, one would tend to believe that you wouldnt see them in the top ten after that game the rest of the year.

    PLEASE FOOTBALL GAWDS PLEASE….give us playoffs.

    Glad you got the joke I guess I should have put j/k after my comment.

    The SEC crowd is really uptight this morning!

    BSU is the Harlem Globetrotters of college football…They play the Washington Generals all year then schedule one good team when they have all summer to prepare….why swap one BCS school for another, why not play two in one season like the rest of the freaking planet? You telling me you can’t get out of your game with Toledo?
    I swear I hear that globetrotter song when they run out on that blue field… it is their version of the striped ball…The only thing left to do is have Kellen Moore throw a bucket of feathers on the ESPN boys to keep pumping up there over inflated rankings… (and ESPN’s ratings)…

  13. soflatrojan says: Nov 19, 2010 11:55 AM

    Gamustangdude,

    I have a hard time taking Georgia seriously the way UF bitch slaps them every year. I would prefer to see them play Alabama, LSU or UF.

    Is there that much of a difference between UGA and Ole Miss?

  14. cometkazie says: Nov 19, 2010 11:58 AM

    Why Georgia?

    Will Richt be back next year?

  15. gamustangdude says: Nov 19, 2010 12:08 PM

    @soflatrojan,

    I wouldn’t say bitch slap every year given the Georgia leads the sereis 47-40-2.

    But don’t worry Florida will catch up one day

  16. soflatrojan says: Nov 19, 2010 12:26 PM

    Gamustangdude,
    I am not a Gator fan but haven’t they beat UGA 17 of the last 20 times? Which is about the period of time that UF became one of the top programs in CFB.

  17. blitz4848 says: Nov 19, 2010 12:27 PM

    @gamustangdude

    Think SoFlaTrojan was referring to your lifetime in college sports.
    UF beating the dawgs 18 of the last 21 would be considered getting bitch slapped, being owned, no longer worthy of being called a rivalry, etc…

  18. soflatrojan says: Nov 19, 2010 12:28 PM

    Gamustangdude,
    Look at the team UF rolled out there this year and they still beat you.

  19. blitz4848 says: Nov 19, 2010 12:34 PM

    All that said–still believe the Dawgs will do the SEC proud and “mash” the Spud Smurfs.

    gamustangdude says:

    But don’t worry Florida will catch up one day

    *********************

    Given the fact that Florida is 18-3-0 since 1990, that one day is somewhere between 2017 and 2021.

  21. gamustangdude says: Nov 19, 2010 12:39 PM

    Ok so we’ve established that Florida beat Georgia, and that has what to do with Boise possibly playing Georgia at the beginning of next year?

    Look at the team Georgia rolled on the field. So Florida beat a 4-4 Georgia team…and your point is meaningless.

    Doesn’t matter which lifetime we’re referring to Georgia has bitched slapped Florida More times than Florida has bitched slapped Georgia.

    End of Story 47-40 numbers don’t lie.

    Georgia has Beat Florida 47 times and has only lost 40 times.

    Feels good saying it twice in a row

  22. gamustangdude says: Nov 19, 2010 12:40 PM

    @Edgy

    Did you determine that all by yourself, or did you need help?

  23. soflatrojan says: Nov 19, 2010 12:41 PM

    Ok this is weird!

    Blitz, Edgy and myself are all on the same side of a discussion. I am going to restart my computer and make sure this is not some kind of mistake!

    Does the truth hurt? BTW, what I’ve seen shows Georgia 46-39-2 before this season. From what I’ve seen, you’re trying to count a game against a team that played before Florida officially became the university and before they even fielded an official football team. The Gators dispute this game and many sources don’t count this as a game. What’s next, are you going to count scrimmages against Florida high schools? :roll:

  28. gamustangdude says: Nov 19, 2010 1:34 PM

    1. The truth? What truth you’re assumming an outcome 7-11 years from now. That’s not truth

    2. “From what i’ve seen” Really? this from a guy who claims to know the future. righhhht

    3. Yes, when the UGA football Team starts scrimmaging against Florida highs schools, we will count those. Really?

  29. blitz4848 says: Nov 19, 2010 2:19 PM

    @gamustangsdude

    Might be careful what you wish for–those Florida high schools have more talent than any other state—they would give UGA all they wanted and then some…..

    It’s funny how UGA fans talk about the “recent” history when they say they own GaTech but the same doesn’t apply to their annual beating in Jacksonville.

  30. gamustangdude says: Nov 19, 2010 2:22 PM

    @Blitz4848

    I’ll take my chances with UGA over florida high schools, but thanks for the heads up

    Also, umm where is my post regarding Georgia Tech?

  31. edgy says: Nov 19, 2010 2:29 PM

    gamustangdude says:

    1. The truth? What truth you’re assumming an outcome 7-11 years from now. That’s not truth

    ***********

    You know what, you can continue to put your head in the sand but the fact is that the Bulldogs are going to be lapped very soon, 46 wins or 47.

    “From what I’ve seen” is NOTHING about the future but the fact that Georgia and their fans are so desperate for wins that they’ll count games that were played before the University actually existed and even had an official team.

  32. gamustangdude says: Nov 19, 2010 2:46 PM

    @ edgy,

    again with your assumptions, whatever crystal ball or Harry Potter Spell you used to see that future you keep trying to foretell, hide it before the feds get a hold of it.

    desperate for wins, roger lets say we take that 1 away. Who’s still winning the series Edgy? Just answer the question or move along. (Hint: it’s not Florida)

    Don’t you have some fake ass comupter rankings to compute?

  33. superfbfan says: Nov 19, 2010 2:55 PM

    @ edgy

    “the fact that Georgia and their fans are so desperate for wins”

    Playing a player who threatened to kill someone is a team that is desperate for wins…that series has become a mental thing for UGA…they always play so tight and turn the ball over…UF has qb problems that I don’t think will be solved anytime soon so maybe UGA can turn this thing around…

  34. soflatrojan says: Nov 19, 2010 4:13 PM

  35. edgy says: Nov 19, 2010 4:15 PM

    gamustangdude says:

    @ edgy,

    again with your assumptions,

    *********************

    I guess the truth does hurt. Look, everyone BUT Georgia does give them credit for the win but NOT against Florida but Florida Agricultural College. Yeah, 47 or 46 doesn’t matter so why don’t we just make it up and say that Florida leads the series 54-22-1. Oh, that’s right because it’s NOT the truth.

    Making assumptions – really? Ok, I’ll make an assumption: Meyer is 4-1 against Richt and has 2 national championships to his 0. If they both continue to coach their respective schools, Meyer will continue to bring in superior athletes and compete for a national championship while Richt won’t and Meyer will continue to win the majority of his games against Richt. Raise your hands, if you believe that opposite of that. I assume that most people will side with my point of view on that one.

    Oh and as far as your crack: at least I’ve got the brains to do it and I don’t try to put in “fake ass wins” to do it, either.

  36. blitz4848 says: Nov 19, 2010 4:27 PM

    I can confirm SoFlaTrojan has been called “other” names on CFT on multiple occasions………………

  37. gamustangdude says: Nov 19, 2010 4:38 PM

    edgy said” at least I’ve got the brains to do it”

    Another assumption on your end.

    But regardless, without Richt winning any National Championships we’re still able to recruit with the big boy’s maybe it’s because we have more SEC titles than Florida, I’m not sure.
    Take a look at our recruiting classes in the past.

    What truth are you talking about Edgy, what truth? There’s no truth to YOU assuming the series will be tied in 2021. That’s not a fact, you assume it will happen, where’s the truth?

    Oh, wait here’s the truth. Bottom line whether or not the series is 46-40-2 or its 47-40-2 bottom line is that Georgia owns Florida.

    And to correct you earlier statement there’s only 1 win Florida is disputing, so we can calm down on the “wins” it’s only “win” buddy.

    Get back to your half-eaten pastries and continue to blab on about series you have no inclination about, just stick to your “Fake A$$” computer rankings, ’cause lord knows we look forward to them.

    You’re right, but I do think it’s funny that most Boise fans love to brag how they beat Oklahoma in 2007, wasn’t that a different team? How about when Boise beat Oregon / TCU? Weren’t they different teams? Yet you use these past teams as arguments for this years’ National Championship campaign.

    That is a straight up facial.

  46. bsu2010 says: Nov 19, 2010 5:55 PM

    BSU team is pretty much the same team as when they beat Oregon and TCU just older and better. Comparing last year and then 5 years prior is a big difference. I am only saying we beat who we are allowed to play, that is it. We both know they won’t ever let us play in the National Championship since we aren’t a big money school. I just hope more big schools will continue to play us and we can continue to prove we are a contender.

  47. edgy says: Nov 19, 2010 5:56 PM

    gamustangdude,

    Florida has won 18 of the last 21 and you’re saying that Georgia OWNS Florida. Seriously, it looks like the monkey is back typing and he thinks he wrote something intelligent.

    BTW, HYPOCRITE:

    What the hell are you talking about edgy? Show me where i said georgia earned 46 wins in one year i’ll wait.

    It’s not hypocrite there edgy.

    On one hand I’m arguing a series and whether or not Georgia owns Florida in the series, in which they do by numbers there’s no argument. However on the other hand, the other argument is simply one game. Not the same. So whenever you’re ready you can take the florida c%%k out of your mouth and jump off the band wagon back into your trough please, aren’t those computer rankings due shortly?

    @BSU2010

    Proving you’re a contender, you and edgy must be drinking the same kool-aid. If it involves different players it’s a different team, “close to the same” isn’t “exactly the same.” Now back to your contender, you’ll never be considered a contender until the competition stiffens, now whether that includes UGA or not is what we are debating here, however that’s a step in the right direction.

  49. edgy says: Nov 19, 2010 7:28 PM

    Forget Mississippi and Louisville “swapping” games for 2011. Boise and Mississippi will play in the 2014 Chick and BYU will take their place next year against the Rebels and will play for the $900k that Boise was to get.

  50. edgy says: Nov 19, 2010 7:33 PM

    Please, you are a hypocrite of the first degree and you can’t defend it. You WANT all of Boise and TCU’s accomplishments to be considered IN THE PAST but you WANT all of Georgia’s PAST ACCOMPLISHMENTS to be in the PRESENT. Maybe I should spell it out for you so you can understand what you are: H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-T-E.

    Before you started all your bull about Florida, I was going to point out how this is a better match up for Boise because Georgia should be a better opponent than Mississippi but then you come up with your BS. Seriously, 3-18 and you believe that Georgia OWNS Florida. BALONEY.

  51. gamustangdude says: Nov 19, 2010 7:51 PM

    Whatever edgy, I’ve stated my points and it will be very ignorant of you to only focus on the later part of the series. Well, continue to do that then, I however will focus on the entire series and Georgia owns Florida 47-40-2. What happened the last 21 years doesn’t begin to tell the story of what occurred in the whole series. But I’m sure you’ll continue to blabber on.

    Anyone more intelligent than a rock can go back and read the arguments from the beginning, and see when and why I mentioned the series. It was only to remind Florida Fans that recent Florida success doesn’t equate to a series of success by Georgia. But you missed that, you only chose to read and see what suits you. We’ll Continue, I’m done. I’m sure you’ll post some type of response that I won’t read. Don’t stay up to late working on those “rankings” I can’t wait to find out where “edgy” has Auburn ranked after this weekend. (Sense the sarcasm?)

  54. gamustangdude says: Nov 22, 2010 2:02 PM

    @edgy
    I’m going to try and dumb it down a bit for you this time, try and stay with me…

    When discussing Boise and their campaign for this year’s National Championship my argument is that it doesn’t matter what they’ve done in the past it only matters what they done this year. Something you missed, I don’t think you can read well.

    When discussing Georgia being bitch-slapped by Florida year after year, my comment was on the series. Georgia has bitched-slapped Florida more times than Florida has bitched slapped Georgia.

    Bottom line it’s not hypocritical, it’s actually Apples and Oranges. But if you were as smart as you assume you are then you would understand that. But given your recent comments, you actually being that smart, is like me trying to give a whale a tic-tac. Impossible
