WAC could extend invitation to North Texas

That’s right. The same North Texas who owns a whopping 3-8 record this season and who (rightfully) canned Todd Dodge mid-season. The same North Texas who hasn’t had a winning season -- or anything remotely close -- since 2004.

In light of the recent report that Hawaii could become the fourth WAC team to bolt to the Mountain West, commissioner Karl Benson continued to take a proactive approach to keep the conference from falling apart altogether. With new members UTSA and Texas State already on the football-only slate, Benson hinted that maybe, just maybe, the fightin’ Todd Dodge’s Mean Green would be next on the list.

Benson claimed he hoped that the university would consider making a move from the Sun Belt to the WAC, but in year’s past, the mere thought of high-priced travel arrangements was enough to keep UNT from making any move.

Currently, North Texas is building a brand new football stadium set to open for the 2011 season. Denton also lies in one of the richest recruiting grounds in the country in the Dallas-Ft. Worth region, a trip that most WAC schools would be willing to make.

There has been no official word from the university one way or the other, but Benson said he spoke with North Texas earlier today.
