How bad/sad is the current state of the WAC?
They have been rejected by the University of North Freaking Texas (sorry, Ben) for at least the third time in just over a decade. Yes, things are that bad for the conference and commissioner Karl Benson.
Following up on Monday night reports that had the Mean Green once again considering an offer from the league, the Denton Chronicle reports that UNFT has once again decided against making the jump from the Sun Belt. Benson had phoned the school earlier in the day to gauge their level of interest in the conference.
As it turns out, that level rhymes with the word “schmero”.
“I told [Benson] that while we appreciate the interest, the University of North Texas is going to be a member of the Sun Belt Conference and will work to continue building the league,” athletic director Rick Villarreal said. “We appreciate the opportunity and wish them luck as they move forward.”
UNFT becomes the second known school to turn down an offer from th WAC; earlier this month, Montana decided to remain at the Div. 1-AA level for the time being. The conference did add Texas State and the University of Texas at San Antonio, so they have that going for them. Which is good.
They should just disband all the conferences and have a playoff. That would keep people who root for a crappy team that happens to be in a good conference from trying to lord it over everyone.
Damn right. We’re too good for the WAC.
Slim Charles is on to something—if North Texas turns down a conference invite that conference should be immediately be abolished—–
C’mon the North Texas Mean Green have higher aspirations—-they are eyeing Conference USA.
Actually, my comment wasn’t mean at a dis at UNT or anything. It’s just something I’ve noticed in general. The WAC is donezo.
I believe that with the WAC collapsing and the Mountain West struggling, there will be a major shakeup of all the lower tier conferences very soon!
You know, for a conference that is about to send it’s champ to a BCS bowl for the fourth time in five years the WAC sure is having some problems. (Understatement of the year)
